Why are there so many dog breeds than cats?
Some dogs seem like different species, with the small ones being only the size of a teacup and the large ones being heavier than a human. As for cats, they all seem to look almost the same. Not only do the cats we raise now look almost the same, but the wild ancestor of domestic cats, the African wild cat, is almost the same as the current tabby cat. Cats have not changed much in the nearly ten thousand years since they were domesticated! In this article we are going to discuss some about Dog breeds.
Jobs assigned to dogs by humans:
1. Housekeeping
2. Hunting
3. Shepherding
4. Pulling a sled
5. Blind guide
6. Search and rescue
7. Drug Enforcement
. . . . . .
The jobs humans assign to cats:
1. Catch mice
2. … No more
Humans
Humans have domesticated dogs for at least 15,000 years. At first, humans, who were still eating raw meat and drinking blood , used leftover food to lure gray wolves . Among the gray wolves that followed humans, some of them underwent genetic changes and gained the ability to digest starch, making them more adaptable to human life. From then on, gray wolves were divided into wolves and dogs.
Dogs inherited the social characteristics of their ancestors. After coming to humans, dogs obey their owners who have the right to allocate resources as if they were the alpha wolf. Because of their good obedience, they are trained to be handy tool animals and developed for various uses. Naturally, they also need to have bodies that can adapt to different climates and environments. Dogs have so many types of work to do, so their appearance is also diverse .
Later, due to the rise of the pet economy and human aesthetic preferences, more pets with different appearances were bred, but they are genetically the same and are all the same animal.
Domestication
The path to cat domestication is somewhat different from that of dogs, or in other words, cats are self-domesticated, not entirely by humans.
Cats have been around humans for a much shorter time than dogs. Around 4000 BC, the agricultural revolution brought a bumper harvest to the Fertile Crescent of the Mesopotamian region, and humans needed to store surplus food – barns.
Wherever there are barns, there are mice. Cats followed the mice to humans and have a cooperative relationship with humans.
Cats are not fed by humans. Except when there is no food in the barn, people feed them in order to keep the cats. Otherwise, cats hunt on their own and live freely.
Even now, some cats are still self-reliant: many cats raised in rural areas are only fed with leftover porridge. Can a pure carnivore cat survive on that little porridge? They still have to hunt for food.
Cats’ bodies have not changed at all due to their cooperation with humans. At least they have not evolved the ability to digest starch like dogs. In this regard, they have only made a little progress compared to their ancestors, and cats are still pure carnivores.
And because of the solitary nature of cats, they have almost no obedience and cannot be trained, and therefore cannot be driven by humans. Therefore, there are police dogs in the world, but no police cats .
The relationship between us and cats is a cooperative one, and our use of cats is just their animal instinct .
Is it necessary to change your body to adapt to the job of catching mice ?
It is only in modern times that things have changed.
Cats, like dogs, have taken on the role of spiritual companions for humans, and this second job may be more important than the first.
Because of the diversity of human aesthetics, cats will inevitably be transformed by humans, such as the Sphynx cat , the Munchkin cat, the Garfield… and so on. The differences between them are still quite large.
Humans have one more requirement for cats: appearance, and now it seems that appearance is the only requirement left.
Cats can be divided into large, medium and small sizes. Our native Chinese rural cats, Curl-eared cats, Cornish Rex cats , etc. are small cats, British shorthair, American shorthair, Garfield and other cats are medium-sized cats, Maine Coon, Siberian Forest Cat , Ragdoll cats and other cats are large cats.
It’s just that the difference between the size of cats is not that big.
With the development of the pet economy, humans will definitely breed more bizarre cats. After all, the path of aesthetics always seeks perfection, from popular to implicit, and will eventually become morbid.
